A CRITIC REMINISCES

There were many talented actors and many talented directors who worked local stages during my tenure as a critic. There were not so many who combined both talents – and few who did so – and continue to do so – as effortlessly as Mark DeMichele.

Mark’s gift is a sharp-edged understanding of character that enhances both his acting and directing. I can think of two instances where his work was beyond exceptional: His portrayal of Henry Kissinger in Nixon’s Nixon at Actors Theatre of Phoenix and his direction of Suicide in B Flat at the Black Actors Troupe.

There are many other examples that I could cite but those two remain so vividly in the memory that they define Mark for me.
